One of my favourite destination in the med – if not my absolute favourite – is the small town of Hydra, in the Saronic islands just south-west of Athens.

The arrival into Hydra is truly spectacular: after a couple of hours of sailing past barren islands, you go beyond a headland and the whole charming town, built on the hillside around the marina like some kind of amphitheatre dedicated to sailing, swings into view with real majesty. The sight of the place is enough to make grown men cry!

But it’s not just that - Hydra has so much going for it: it’s a remote island fishing village which has scorned the trappings of modern wealth - indeed, there are no roads for cars to drive on, let alone cars!

Plus there’s a multitude of outstanding marina-side bars and tavernas which are armed with the freshest of fish, and which positively exude generosity and hospitality. Add to that the fact that of course, the climate, being located where it is, is brilliant.

Located a couple of lazy day-sails away from the capital of Greece, it’s only a delightful voyage through the Saronic islands away from the Greek capital – but it feels like another world.

For sheer beauty and charm of the place, it’s my pick of the whole of the med – and that includes some seriously incredible places!
