Crinan

Crinan Marina

Crinan Basin Marina holds a number of short and long term moorings. Diesel and Petrol can be purchased in town and the bay is mostly peaceful. Power Points can be located along the shore, but are mostly for long term moorings.

The Marina office can be contacted with any enquiry and Wi-fi is available in the area from BT.

Crinan

Crinan is a small village mostly known for it’s canal that links Loch Gilp with the Sound of Jura. Crinan’s beautiful basin views include the isle of Jura and the famous Duntrune Castle, burnt down in the late 1600s. Crinan has roots in the Creones tribe that lived in the area around 200AD but was originally known as Port Righ before the canal came.

The area around Crinan has an abundance of natural life that remains untouched by human hands and is one of the main reasons that people come to visit. The town itself enjoys a hotel, coffee shop, restaurant, scallop farm and a small lighthouse which stands no more than a storey off of the ground.

Things to see and do

As mentioned, the area around Crinan has a variety of natural life. Over 24 different bird species have been sighted in the area so far and the maze of pathways around the surrounding hills are dotted with bird watching houses. The 35 hectare Crinan Wood is home to numerous ferns and lichens too.

Alternatively, a walk around the shoreline will allow you to enjoy the buzz of activity around the basin and canal. With numerous fishers, cargo ships and sightsee-ers, there’s always something going on to enjoy watching. A walk around the headland will let you near Duntrune Castle, but the land is still private property and the castle itself is little more than a burnt out shell.

Eating and Drinking

The Crinan Seafood Bar is one of the best places to go in Crinan for an excellent lunch. All the seafood is caught fresh in the basin, but they don’t just limit their menu to that either. Vegetarian options along with fresh red meat from the local farms are available for anyone. The prices are competitive and the food is excellent.
