Chartering with a Hostess or Chef

It’s not just Skippers who can make a sailing holiday even more relaxing and stress-free. Here’s our guide to chartering with a hostess and a cook!

Sailing holidays in the Med are, by their very nature, really relaxing - but there’s a few options to make your holiday charter even more stress-free – by adding crew to your holiday charter to do the shopping, washing-up, tidying and cooking…. We explain a little more about traditional crew you might consider:

Skipper at work Chartering with a Skipper

A Skipper will captain the ship, man the helm, stop you crashing into things, and be responsible for getting you and the boat from point to point sefely. He or she will also do all the sailing manoeuvres, sort out the paperwork at each marina, and refill the fuel and water tanks (amongst loads of other duties – we cover the skipper in another blog.)

A Skipper typically costs between €200 and €250 a day (which works out at €1,400 to €1,750 per week) depending upon location. A Skipper will need their own cabin on-board your boat.

Hostess Chartering with a Hostess

Whilst the Skipper is there primarily for your safety, the Hostess is there entirely for your comfort: they’ll help you by: keeping the boat (including your cabins) neat, tidy and clean; by doing the shopping (so that when you arrive into a marina, your first thought doesn’t have to be “Oh, we need to get some more tomatoes” – albeit they spend your money); by preparing two meals a day (usually breakfast and a light lunch - with the idea that you eat ashore for the other meal), and doing all the washing up.

In short, they’ll take over responsibility for the few chores you have to do after you’ve instructed the Skipper where you want to go – so that you can focus on relaxing, sitting in the sun, and having fun.

HostessA Hostess typically costs between €150 and €220 a day (which works out at €1,050 to €1,540 per week) depending upon location. You can charter them on their own, or with a Skipper, and they will also need their own cabin on-board your boat, though in some cases we can find a Skipper and Hostess who are happy to share a double cabin.

Chef Chartering with a Chef

Of course, having someone cooking for you is one thing, and the Hostess will do their best with the kitchen area they have at their disposal, but if you really want to make the most of your time on earth, then you could consider hiring a professional cook or chef. They’ll delight your taste-buds with their outstanding culinary skills, can cater to any menu, will showcase the local cuisine (if you agree to their menu).

A Chef typically costs between €200 and €250 a day (which works out at €1,400 to €1,750 per week) depending upon location. Similar to a Hostess, you can charter them on their own or with a Skipper, and they will also need their own private cabin or cabin shared with another member of crew on-board your boat.
